How to get started with Pop/Rock vocal style if you are classically trained
The best way to start singing rock/pop music is...
to START SINGING ROCK/POP MUSIC!
So often we think we have to arrive at a final product right away! But if you give yourself some time to play and discover, you can have a lot of fun delving into this new style! Spend some time emulating artists that you love—just a phrase at a time. This is NOT to copy them! Instead, it’s a way to start discovering new colors in your own voice. Pay attention to the quality of sound, the way they start and end a phrase, the little style-isms that they infuse into their vocals…and experiment with putting it into your own voice!
Try some Adele, Whitney Houston, Katy Perry, Sam Smith, Harry Styles, John Legend, Lizzo…whatever YOU like!
1. Listen to a phrase of the recording—the beginnings of songs work great since they are usually the quieter and simpler parts of the song.
2. Sing it back in your own voice—explore the new colors!
3. Do this with lots of different artists until you start getting a little more comfortable making some new sounds!
4. Join BVC to get one-on-one help with these styles! We work on pop/rock style in our Adult membership and we dedicate a whole MONTH to this style in our Academy high school program.
