My voice needs a workout π¬

Chelsea here!
My first time teaching BVC Studio class after maternity leave nearly wrecked me, and it totally freaked me out. Here's what I've been doing about it:
To set the scene, I have felt vocally wiped out since the start of the year. And now somehow it's June...?!?
For starters, in January I had my second baby girl and I'll tell you what! Childbirth and the newborn stage will really do a number on your hormones and overall well-being! (Surprise!) Add to that the lack of sleep and you've got a recipe for vocal exhaustion right there.
Then when I was just starting to get my footing again, I got hit by a bus more commonly known as the flu. I kid you not, I was super sick for two entire weeks. After about five days I thought I was feeling better only to get struck down by another wave of coughing fits and a fever that lasted for another week.
Add to this, I had A STYE ON MY EYELID for 30+ days, at the same time.
AND!
While I was sick I did the photoshoot for all the Master Your Mix pictures.
It's been rough.
All this to say, that first BVC Studio class back into teaching, I (stupidly) felt confident I could simply demonstrate for our clients like I usually do in a 90 minute class, no problem! Instead, my voice was wrecked the next day and I realized I had pushed it too hard in its poor condition.
So what am I doing doing to get my voice back in shape?
π I bookmarked these piano scale recordings to do in the car after I drop my girls at daycare each morning.
π I booked a few voice lessons with my own teacher.
π I press play on my very own Warm-Up Series recordings and sing-along.
π I saved a few YouTube karaoke tracks to challenging songs that require me to focus on my technique and not just mindlessly sing along.
Ready to get your own voice back in shape? (I bet you are, because honestly I get emails and DM's every day from folks looking to get back into vocal shape after a break, time away, etc).
My best resources for your own singing workouts
- This totally free YouTube playlist of my most common vocal scales so you can mix and match and create your own warmup routine. In keys for sopranos/mezzos and tenors/baritones.
-
The Chelsea Wilson Vocal Studio Warm-Up Series (yes, I'm biased because I made it, but Broadway stars and singers just like you use it every day so take their word for it!) Use the code BVC20 to save 20% on any purchase.
-
My free 10-minute mix voice warmup video I've been sharing a lot lately on social media. Get it if you haven't yet!
-
Master Your Mix, the ultimate roadmap if you're ready to finally fix your mix and sing with vocal freedom! You can get it (and a free year-long subscription to BVC Masterclass) here.
One more piece of advice if you're getting back into singing after a little (or long) break:
Take it easy! Short, concentrated bursts of practicing is the best way to begin. And I mean SHORT, like 5 minutes! Then 10, then 15, etc. Build up your stamina over time (days and weeks) and be patient as your voice gets stronger!
Much love and happy singing!
